Do You Know How Long Hepatitis C Can Remain Infectious?

Recent studies indicate that hepatitis C can remain infectious at room temperatures for up to 6-weeks.  Is your practice following the latest infection control guidelines for infection control? The CDC reveals that approximately 3 million adults in the U.S., especially Baby Boomers (born 1945–1965), are infected with hepatitis C. Shockingly, 3 out of 4 infected individuals remain unaware of their condition. Once infected, 8 out of 10 people remain infected for life. These numbers are staggering.

How to Diagnose Hepatitis C

The CDC recommends a two-step blood test process for diagnosing hepatitis C:

  1. Antibody Test: This screening determines if a person has ever been exposed to the hepatitis C virus.
  2. Follow-Up RNA Test: If the antibody test is positive, this test confirms whether the person is still infected.

Proper diagnosis is essential for timely treatment and preventing the spread of the virus.

Who Needs to Be Tested for Hepatitis C?

The CDC recommends testing for the following groups:

  • Individuals born between 1945 and 1965
  • Those who received blood products with clotting factors before 1987
  • Individuals who received blood transfusions or organ transplants before July 1992
  • Anyone who has ever injected drugs, even once
  • People living with HIV
  • Those who have undergone kidney dialysis for several years
  • Health or public safety workers exposed to blood through needle sticks or sharp objects
  • Individuals with blood exposure from someone with hepatitis C or unknown status
  • Infants born to mothers with hepatitis C

These recommendations aim to identify at-risk individuals and facilitate early intervention.

The Role of Dental Practices

Hepatitis C remains a serious public health issue; however, raising awareness, ensuring proper testing, and implementing rigorous infection control measures can significantly reduce its impact. Moreover, dental practices play a vital role in preventing the spread of this virus. By consistently following CDC guidelines and actively educating both staff and patients, your practice can help build a safer and healthier community.
