Are you protecting your computer keyboards in your dental office?

By Olivia Wann

During an onsite mock OSHA – Infection Control audit, we evaluate how the treatment room is cleaned and disinfected. Quite often we note that the keyboards and mice are not addressed. Keyboards can become contaminated with pathogenic microorganisms and can result in cross contamination.

According to a study in a dental college, 80% of the computers were contaminated with a potentially pathogenic bacteria.[1]

How should you address the keyboard and mice?  We have observed using barriers or plastic shields. However, clinical personnel complain that it makes typing difficult and cumbersome. You may wish to consider a cleanable keyboard designed for medical environments.

I particularly like the keyboard and mice created by Man & Machine. I love the way this company states: “Your smile is infectious! Your keyboard shouldn’t be!”

The keyboards and mice are waterproof and washable. You may use an EPA-registered disinfectant.

Save time and prevent the opportunity of cross contamination.
