OSHA Updates its Hazard Communication Standard

OSHA recently revised the criteria under the Hazard Communication Standard to enhance the information available to employees regarding various health and physical hazard classes. These updates are designed to ensure workers have clearer and more comprehensive guidance about potential risks in their work environment, promoting safety and compliance.
Major Changes to Health Hazards
A significant update focuses on health hazards, specifically revising the chapters on skin corrosion/irritation and serious eye damage/eye irritation. These changes aim to provide clearer guidance and improve workplace safety standards.
Label Element Updates
OSHA has updated label elements to match the new and revised hazard classes. These changes ensure better clarity and enhance workplace safety by providing more precise and actionable information.
Updates to Safety Data Sheets (SDS)
Safety data sheets (SDS) updated sections 2, 3, 9, and 11 to reflect the new Hazard Communication Standard. As a result, these updates make safety information more precise and ensure alignment with the revised hazard classification criteria. Additionally, they improve the clarity and usability of SDS, helping employees better understand potential hazards and maintain workplace safety.
Implementation Timeline
OSHA officially updated the standard on July 19, 2024, marking an important step forward in workplace safety. However, the implementation of the updated labels and SDS requirements is scheduled to take effect 18 months after this date, giving organizations ample time to prepare. The rollout of updated labels, hazard communication programs, and employee training will occur on July 29, 2026, ensuring a smooth transition and enhanced compliance across industries.
