Should a Pregnant Employee Take Radiographs?

Dentist viewing radiograph

If a pregnant dentist, dental assistant, or dental hygienist must take patient radiographs, provide a personal dosimetry badge. The badge tracks radiation exposure over time. It ensures the exposure stays within safe limits, according to the ADA. There are important guidelines to follow when a pregnant employee takes radiographs

Barrier Protection is Essential

Additionally, provide appropriate barrier protection while operating radiographic equipment. This includes the use of lead aprons or shields to further reduce radiation exposure to the pregnant employee.

Following the ALARA Principle

Utilize the ALARA (As Low As Reasonably Achievable) principle to minimize radiation exposure. The ALARA principle aims to reduce exposure to radiation by optimizing the equipment and techniques used in radiography, ensuring that only the necessary amount of radiation is used to obtain accurate diagnostic results.

Be Aware of State Regulations

While the ADA offers guidance, it is important to be mindful of any state-specific rules and regulations that may vary from this general interpretation. Each state may have its own set of standards and requirements for radiation safety, so ensure your practice is compliant with local laws in addition to federal recommendations.
